To The Mom At Target Tonight

To the Mom at Target Tonight

To the mom at Target tonight. I could hear that sweet cry of your hungry newborn aisles away. The sound made my uterus skip a beat, that sweet little voice. I thought right away about those snuggly soft baby blankets, the sweet smell of a newborn’s head, the tiny little diapers covering an even smaller tush.  As I got closer to the check out, I felt your pain. I remember the feeling of desperation trying to get the groceries loaded and trying to paying before causing a scene. Trying to hush the baby, and dig for a checkbook at the same time. Feeling overly tired, frantic, and overwhelmed by this tiny little life that is disrupting everyone’s shopping experience.

Unexpected Things Parents Can Do To Protect Their Child: Tips From The Professionals- Part Two

Part two

As most of you know I have a strong connection to the world of first responders. My sister is a paramedic, my father-in-law is a fire chief, and a long time ago I worked directly with firefighters from all across the state at my “big girl job”.  I have heard the horror stories, I have seen the damage to families, and in recent weeks I have watched the tragedy unfold on TV.

So, I have headed to the professionals for their help, easing all those mom brains out there.

Unexpected Things Parents Can Do To Protect Their Child: Tips From The Professionals- Part One

Unexpected things parents can do to protect their child_ Tips from the ProfessionalsPart one

It’s late at night, the room is dark. You can’t sleep and your mind begins to wander. You replay the day’s events over and over again in your head. You think about news coverage you watched as you prepared dinner. The horror on those families faces as they begged for help to find their missing child, the smoke billowing from the home where the firefighters pulled out the family pet, the dark red blood that covered the ground after the hit and run. The evening news shares those images with you as you were about to sit down to a family dinner.

You start to wonder, in the comfort of your bedroom, could that happen to us? How am I going to protect my kids in a world of bad things? You start to sweat and your heart starts to race.

The Big Red Bag

THE BIG RED BAG

Maybe it’s a cult following or it’s a rite of passage for young girls… whatever it is, there is nothing as magical as her smile as she holds that big red bag! The American Girl grin.

You should just be given a catalog as part of your discharge papers as you leave the hospital with your newborn, because no matter how much you try to put it off you WILL own one of those American Girl dolls at some point.

Sorry Mommy

sorry mommy

Those big round eyes look up at me under her bangs, a half smirk finds her lips, and she says in her sweet toddler mispronounced voice “Sorry mommy.”  I turn to wipe up the milk, making sure she doesn’t see the smile that has crept to my face.  How can I stay mad at that sweet face, and she knows it. This happens countless times a day.

It’s Just A Bad Day

bad day 2

“Just because you have a bad day, doesn’t mean you have a bad life.”

It sounds so simple, but why is it some days it’s so hard to remember. When you are crazy busy trying to get everyone dressed and out the door, the toddler has toothpaste all over the bathroom floor, the baby is pulling out the outlet plugs, the dogs barking to go outside, and the washing machine is buzzing at you.  It’s hard not to feel overwhelmed. It’s hard not to feel like you are failing at everything, that you’re not accomplishing anything correctly. It’s hard to feel like your whole world is not mass chaos.

Tonight, I Lost An Hour

Tonight I Lost An Hour2

Tonight, I lost an hour. I lost my self for a whole hour. By the dim light of my phone I looked at the journey of motherhood. I looked at what once  was tiny toes and a bald head turn into crazy giggling toddler with wild blonde hair.

I looked at how my world had changed from a battle field of burp clothes and pump parts to a land fill of paw patrol toys and coloring crayons.
